The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track position in Brazilian Studies.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests center on modern (19th century to the present) Brazilian cultural production (might include literature, film, visual art, music, etc.).

We are especially interested in approaches to the field characterized by:
  • Comparative methods that situate Brazil within Latin America, the hemisphere, and/or the transatlantic world
  • A strong background in literary and/or critical theory
  • Robustly historical treatment of cultural forms (literature, film, visual art, music, etc.)

Subfields of interest include:
  • Theories of racialization as they relate to Luso-Afro-Brazilian studies, and/or Indigenous cultural production
  • The environmental humanities
  • Gender and sexuality studies
  • The relationship between cultural forms and politics


Required Qualifications:

Strong research potential

Broad training in Latin American literary and cultural studies

Experience with and/or interest in directing graduate and undergraduate research

Native or near-native fluency in Portuguese, English, and Spanish

Candidates are expected to have a PhD by the time of appointment: July 1, 2025

The successful candidate will be expected to
  • teach four courses per year (at the undergraduate and graduate levels, potentially in Portuguese and Spanish)
  • serve on academic committees (graduate admissions, exams, dissertations, etc.)
  • mentor and support a diverse student body
  • contribute actively to intellectual life in the department

About the department:

We pursue the creation of knowledge about the Hispanophone and Lusophone world, and we have particular strength in the relationship between culture and politics in the modern era. We offer courses, taught in Spanish and Portuguese, ranging from basic language instruction to advanced undergraduate and graduate seminars on literature and culture. We embrace an interdisciplinary model wherein literary studies stands alongside other approaches such as cultural studies, film studies, critical theory, critical race studies, and feminist and gender studies, among others.

We are a collaborative and interactive department with strong ties to programs including the Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies, the Department of Cinema and Media Studies, the Program in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, the Department of African Studies, and the Department of English.

The Spanish and Portuguese Department is housed within the School of Arts & Sciences, which is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate Division, and the College of Liberal and Professional Studies. Interdisciplinary research and collaboration are supported by the breadth and depth of academic pursuits at Penn as well as the proximity of resources on our contiguous green urban campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
